CAPT. RAMSEY'S (VO): Captain's Log Stardate 53986.2, We're traversing a type-9 nebula near the Romulan Neutral Zone this should be a great mission and R&R for the crew

INT-USS OAKLAND MAIN BRIDGE

CAPT. RAMSEY: Helm maintain 3 quarter impulse till we clear the nebula.

LT. WARREN: Aye, Captain.

CMDR. NELSON: This should be a great way for the crew to unwind after a long boring patrol along the border.

Ramsey turns to her XO.

CAPT. RAMSEY: Yeah it should be a great way for them to.

Then sensors beep and Lieutenant Parchett looks at the tactical station's read out.

CAPT. RAMSEY: Report?

LT. PARCHETT: Something just appeared at the edge of our sensor range ma'am.

Captain Ramsey gets up from the Captain's chair and walks up behind the ops and helm stations.

Captain Branson rubs the bridge of his nose.

CAPT. BRANSON (To com): Steven?

DR. CARLSON (Com Voice): Don't you give me that Needs of the Many outweigh the needs of the few or the one I got enough of that crap from T'Lar when she was taken by Starfleet Intelligence for some top secret mission you can't tell me about

The Bridge fell silent after that.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Sir are you alright?

CAPT. BRANSON: I'm fine Z alright Steven you can stay we'll be back to get you when we completed the mission Enterprise out, Kara set course to the Neutral Zone warp eight I'll be in my ready room you've got the bridge Z.

Captain Branson leaves the bridge as Commander Ivanova sits in the Captain's chair.

CAPT. BRANSON: Come.

The doors opened and Lieutenant Commander Clarkson enters.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: I have the weekly Engineering reports Captain.

Captain Branson sits in the chair and turns to the table and examines the PADD.

CAPT. BRANSON: Good work how will it be before we need to refuel at the nearest Starbase?

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: Not for another few weeks sir.

He puts the PADD down and looks at him.

CAPT. BRANSON: The Oakland has been reported missing near the Neutral Zone.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON (Surprised): The Oakland that's Captain Ramsey's ship didn't you and her date at the Academy after you and Elizabeth broke up in high school?

CAPT. BRANSON: Yeah we did for about a few months then we ended it after the massacre at Wolf 359 she couldn't take the chance of being a Starfleet widow.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: Wonder what happened?

CAPT. BRANSON: Not sure but we'll find out when we get there I need your team ready to beam over to the Oakland when we arrive and find her.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON (nods): You'll have it.

Kyle gets up and leaves the ready room.

EXT-SPACE/FEDERATION-ROMULAN NEUTRAL ZONE

LT. CARLSON: Secured from warp sir.

Captain Branson is sitting in the center chair and Commander Ivanova is sitting in the executive chair as well.

CAPT. BRANSON: Full sensor scans Sito I don't want to get caught off guard.

LT. SITO: Aye, sir.

Lieutenant Sito inputs commands into the ops console.

Captain Branson gets up from the center chair and walks over to the tactical console.

CAPT. BRANSON: Scan for weapon signatures.

LT. MASON (nods): Aye, sir wait picking something up a Romulan warbird decloaking directly ahead.

CUT TO:
EXT-SPACE/FEDERATION-ROMULAN NEUTRAL ZONE

The Enterprise is nose to nose with a decloaking Romulan warbird Kerchan-class warbird.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

Transparent viewer shows the Romulan vessel.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Should we go to red alert?

Captain Branson thinks.

CAPT. BRANSON: No not yet we're here on a peaceful mission Z let's see what they want first Jack hail them.

Lieutenant Mason inputs commands into the tactical console and the transparent viewer changed to the bridge of the Romulan warbird.

CAPT. BRANSON: Commander S'Lok how very good to see you again.

SUB-CMDR. S'LOK (Viewer): Captain Branson I had a feeling that you would be here so what are you doing here on this side of the border?

CAPT. BRANSON: We are conducting a survey of gaseous anomalies and as soon as we've completed the survey we'll leave the border and not trouble you no further.

SUB-CMDR. S'LOK (Viewer): Keep your sensors on those gaseous anomalies Captain

Transmission ends as the Romulan vessel moves off.

LT. MASON: They're moving off continuing scans of the system.

CAPT. BRANSON: Commander, how long will it take to search the system?

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: At least eight days sir.

LT. CARLSON: And the Romulans have a two day head start.

Captain Branson thinks.

CAPT. BRANSON: Then we better get to it Sito?

LT. SITO: Initiating sensor sweep of grid zero-one.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Let's hope we find the Oakland and her crew alright.

CAPT. BRANSON: Me to Z.

(END OF ACT ONE, FADE OUT)

Act Two[]

FADE IN

EXT-SPACE/DEVLIN SYSTEM ASTEROID FIELD

The Enterprise is traversing the field the last known position of the USS Oakland before she went missing.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

Ivanova, Clarkson, Carlson, and Mason are in their positions.

LT. CARLSON: Just flown through grid one-five-seven ma'am.

LT. SITO: Scan of grid one-five-seven is complete. Moving to grid one-five-eight.

Lieutenant Mason reports.

LT. MASON: The Romulan ship is still searching grid two-seven-zero.

Commander Ivanova is surprised by that.

CMDR. IVANOVA (Surprised): They're sure taking their time over there. I wonder if they--.

Kyle suddenly reacts to something on his console.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON (Excited): Whoa I think we might have just struck paydirt.

Ivanova moves to the aft station, where Kyle is looking at a graphic display of a large ASTEROID.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON (Continuing): There's a subspace resonance signature coming from this asteroid. (beat) And from the frequency variances, it looks like the pattern from a Federation warp core.

CMDR. IVANOVA (To com): Captain Branson to the bridge.

Captain Branson enters the bridge and walks over to the aft station.

CAPT. BRANSON: What did you find?

CMDR. IVANOVA: I think we found the Oakland.

CAPT. BRANSON: You sure?

Lieutenant Commander Clarkson explains.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: There's a subspace resonance signature coming from that asteroid, sir. It could be the warp core of the Oakland.

Captain Branson studies the reading.

CAPT. BRANSON: Its the Oakland alright I recognize the power various, let's see the asteroid.

Transparent viewer shows the asteroid.

LT. SITO: I've confirmed Commander Clarkson's scans sir. The resonance signature is originating from somewhere beneath the asteroid's surface.

CAPT. BRANSON: What?

LT. SITO: This asteroid contains several deep chasms large enough for a starship to enter. It is possible the Pegasus drifted into the asteroid's gravitational field and was pulled down into one of the fissures.

Captain Branson walks in front of the ops and helm stations looking at the viewer.

CAPT. BRANSON: Sito try hailing them pritory one hail encode it.

Lieutenant Sito inputs commands into the ops console.

LT. SITO: No response sir.

Then Lieutenant Mason checks his console and reports.

LT. MASON: Sir, the Romulan warbird has altered course once again. They are heading toward our position.

CAPT. BRANSON: Sito how long will it take to locate the Oakland?

Sito thinks then reports.

LT. SITO: At least another six hours, sir.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Damn that's too long we may have to destroy the Oakland.

LT. MASON: It would take most of our photons to do it.

CAPT. BRANSON: Sito would it possible to saturate the asteroid with verteron particles that could mask the resonance signature and prevent the Romulans from detecting it?

LT. SITO: In order for the deception to succeed, it would have to appear to be a natural phenomenon. Verteron particles are artificial in nature.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: Wait a minute. We could blanket the asteroid with high levels of ionising radiation. There's so much of it in the system already, the Romulans won't know the difference.

CAPT. BRANSON: Would it be possible Sito?

Sito thinks.

LT. SITO: Theoretically, sir, it should work.

Commander Ivanova checks her XO console.

CMDR. IVANOVA: If we do this, we have to do it fast the Romulans will be within sensor range in less than a minute.

CAPT. BRANSON: Do it Sito.

LT. SITO: Aye, sir. Initiating ionization field pulse.

CAPT. BRANSON: After she's finished, we'll have to move off... make it look like we scanned the asteroid, but didn't find anything.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Kara lay in a course for the next search grid. Stand by to engage.

Lieutenant Carlson inputs commands into the helm station.

LT. CARLSON: Aye, sir standing by with impulse engines.

CAPT. BRANSON: If this works, the Romulans won't find anything and we can return later. But if it doesn't...

CMDR. IVANOVA: Their dead.

LT. SITO: Ionization pulse complete.

CAPT. BRANSON: Engage one-quarter impulse Kara.

LT. CARLSON: Aye, sir.

EXT-SPACE/DEVLIN ASTEROID FIELD

The Enterprise moves away from the Asteroid just as the Romulan Warbird arrives.

(END OF ACT TWO, FADE OUT)

Act Three[]

FADE IN

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

The transparent viewer shows the asteroid as the Romulan vessel is in front of it as Branson, Ivanova, Carlson, Mason, Sito, and Clarkson as seen at the end of Act Two. Everyone is watching the main viewer, where the Romulan Warbird can be seen near the Asteroid seen earlier.

CAPT. BRANSON (tensed up): What are they doing?

Lieutenant Sito checks her console.

LT. SITO: The Romulans are initiating a tachyon scan of the asteroid. They have switched to their lateral sensor array. Beginning another scan.

CMDR. IVANOVA: They're certainly being thorough.

Captain Branson leans forward.

CAPT. BRANSON: If they found the Oakland they'll start sending Away Teams in shuttles.

Everyone watches the screen for a tense beat... then the Warbird begins to move away from the asteroid.

LT. SITO: They're moving off sir.

A feeling of relief washes across the Bridge.

CAPT. BRANSON: Sito we must convince the Romulans that we're still looking for the Oakland, I want you to continue scanning this system.

LT. SITO: Aye, sir.

Captain Branson leans over at Zhasa.

CAPT. BRANSON: Z I want to be back at this asteroid at oh eight hundred hours tomorrow. Plan your search pattern accordingly.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Aye, sir.

CAPT. BRANSON: You have the Bridge, Commander.

(Branson leaves the bridge as Commander Ivanova sits in the chair)

CMDR. IVANOVA: Initiate search of grid one-six-three.

EXT-SPACE/DEVLIYN SYSTEM ASTEROID FIELD

The Enterprise is still traversing the asteroid.

INT-CAPTAIN BRANSON'S QUARTERS

John sleeping when the com activates.

CMDR. IVANOVA (Com Voice): Captain Branson report to the bridge

John gets dressed and heads to the bridge.

CUT TO:
INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

Captain Branson enters from the turbo-lift.

CAPT. BRANSON: Report?

CMDR. IVANOVA: We're returning to the asteroid.

CAPT. BRANSON: Mister Mason, where are the Romulans?

LT. MASON: They are out of sensor range on the far side of the system.

CAPT. BRANSON: Kara take us to within fifteen kilometers of the asteroid and hold that position.

LT. CARLSON: Aye, sir.

Lieutenant Carlson inputs commands into the helm station.

LT. CARLSON: We're within fifteen kilometers of the asteroid sir.

At the aft section Lieutenant Sito is at one of the consoles as Captain Branson and Commander Ivanova are at the station.

LT. SITO: For the past several hours, I have been scanning the area where we detected the resonance signature of the Oakland. From the strength and polarity of the signature, it would appear that most of the warp core is still intact.

CAPT. BRANSON: Have you been able to hail them?

LT. SITO: No response still sir.

CAPT. BRANSON: Send this hail.

LT. SITO: Aye, sir you're on.

CAPT. BRANSON: To the crew of the USS Oakland this is John Branson Captain of the Federation Starship USS Enterprise we're about fifteen kilometers from the asteroid that we're attempting to make contact with you.

CAPT. RAMSEY (Com Voice): ....Enterprise...attempting...contact....please respond...

CAPT. BRANSON: Amina if you can hear me we're making attempts to rescue you and your ship.

Nothing but static.

LT. SITO: We've lost contact with them.

CAPT. BRANSON: Damn it what can we do?

CMDR. IVANOVA: But how do we get to it? I wouldn't want to try to transport through that much solid rock.

CAPT. BRANSON: Agreed what about a shuttle or the Captain's Yacht?

LT. SITO: I would recommend against it, sir. There may be gravimetric or magnetic fluctuations inside the asteroid which would overpower the engines of a shuttlecraft or the Yacht.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Wait what if we take the Enterprise into the asteroid?

CAPT. BRANSON: What?

CMDR. IVANOVA: Sito enlarge this section right here.

The transparent viewer shows a LARGE CHASM on the surface of the asteroid.

CAPT. BRANSON: What are you getting at Z?

CMDR. IVANOVA: This chasm is large enough for us to maneuver in. Besides, if we ever hope to rescue the Oakland and her crew, we're going to need a starship to do it.

CAPT. BRANSON: Sito is that possible?

LT. SITO: In 2370 the USS Enterprise-D under the command of Admiral Picard did this same thing when they were searching for the USS Pegasus, if we divert power to the shields and dampeners it should be possible.

Captain Branson, Commander Ivanova, and Lieutenant Sito walks to their areas.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Shields up. Inertial dampers at maximum.

CAPT. BRANSON: Kara plot a course into the chasm, maneuvering thrusters only.

Lieutenant Carlson inputs commands into the helm.

LT. CARLSON: Course plotted, sir.

CAPT. BRANSON (tensed up): Take us in.

CUT TO:
EXT-SPACE/DEVLYIN SYSTEM ASTEROID FIELD

The Enterprise moves down into the huge fissure (which is many times wider than the ship) on the asteroid's surface and the ship disappears from view.

(END OF ACT THREE, FADE OUT)

Act Four[]

FADE IN

EXT-INSIDE ASTEROID

The Enterprise is in the cave of the asteroid.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

As before. Everyone is watching the main viewer, which shows a dark view of the interior of a vast and deep tunnel of rock which the ship is traveling through. There are small turns and adjustments that the ship keeps making to its course as it moves through the winding, twisting cavern. Branson is on his feet, moving from station to station, keeping a wary eye on what's happening.

LT. SITO: We are now two kilometers beneath the surface.

Then the ship jolts slightly.

LT. MASON: Captain, we are encountering shifts in the magnetic field density.

Then the ship shakes to port again.

CAPT. BRANSON: Kara if this passage narrows to less than five hundred meters, abort the mission.

LT. CARLSON: Aye, sir.

Then Sito reports.

LT. SITO: Picking something up directly ahead.

Transparent viewer shows the USS Oakland a Parlimental-class vessel drifting.

CAPT. BRANSON: Life-signs?

LT. SITO: Still reading them sir.

CAPT. BRANSON: I'll beam over there rescue team to transporter room 3.

INT-OAKLAND MAIN ENGINEERING

Commander Clarkson and Commander Ivanova are searching for survivors.

CMDR. IVANOVA: Hello? Is there anyone here? (to Clarkson.) See if you can bring main power online.

LTCMDR. CLARKSON: Aye, Commander.

Commander Clarkson goes to one of the consoles.

INT-OAKLAND MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

Captain Branson and Lieutenant Mason break in. They find the helmsman, Warren is uninjured. Ramsey in unconscious. Branson scans her then puts his hand on her cheek she wakes.

CAPT. RAMSEY: C-Captain Branson?

CAPT. BRANSON (Smiles): Hey Amina.

CAPT. RAMSEY: You're here.

CAPT. BRANSON: Good to see you again.

CAPT. RAMSEY: My crew?

CAPT. BRANSON: You took heavy casualties. We're treating the survivors.

CAPT. RAMSEY: Thanks.

Suddenly, the ship SHAKES.

CAPT. RAMSEY: What the hell was that?

The ship jolts again.

CAPT. BRANSON (to com): Branson to Enterprise report?

CUT TO:
INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

LT. SITO: Something is going on standby to beam back with the wounded.

CAPT. BRANSON (Com Voice): Alright

The lift doors opened and Captain Branson, Lieutenant Carlson, and Commander Ivanova enter and assume their stations.

CAPT. BRANSON: What the hell?

LT. SITO: The Romulans fired on the entrance to the chasm with their disruptors... they've sealed us in.

OFF their reactions as they look at the viewer...

(END OF ACT FOUR, FADE OUT)

Act Five[]

FADE IN

INT-ASTEROID

Both the Enterprise and Oakland are trapped.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

Continuous from Act Four. Everyone is still looking at the sealed rock face on the Transparent viewer. Mason reacts to something on his console.

LT. MASON: Sir... there is an incoming message... it is from the Warbird.

They exchange a few surprised looks.

CAPT. BRANSON: On screen.

Lieutenant Mason inputs commands into the tactical station, S'Lok now appears on the screen. He seems very pleased with himself.

CMDR. S'LOK (Viewer):Captain... you seem to be in a very... unfortunate circumstance. How can we help?

Captain Branson folds his arms.

CAPT. BRANSON: Are you responsible for this?

SUB-COM. S'LOK (Viewer): I'm not sure. We were conducting some geological experiments on the surface of the asteroid. It is entirely possible that we accidently sealed you in. If only we had known you were beneath the surface, if you had shared your plans with us, this might have been avoided

Captain Branson gets a bit frustrated.

CAPT. BRANSON: What do you want S'Lok?

SUB-CMDR. S'LOK (Viewer): I don't want anything, Captain, but I will offer to help you

CAPT. BRANSON: I'm listening.

SUB-CMDR. S'LOK (Viewer): By transporting your crew aboard my ship. We'll take you back to Romulus where, after a short stay as our guests, you will be returned to the Federation

Captain Branson turns to Ivanova then back to the transparent viewer.

CAPT. BRANSON: Thank you for your generous offer. I will take it under advisement.

CMDR. S'LOK [on viewscreen]: As you wish. We will be continuing our research in this system for a while longer. I await your decision

Transmission ends.

CAPT. RAMSEY: We can't abandon the Oakland or the Enterprise the Romulans wondering about the Sovereign-class vessels since they were launched.

CAPT. BRANSON: Agreed. Options?

LT. MASON: Sir I believe we could use the phasers to cut our way out.

LT. SITO: It will be risky the asteroid's internal structure is highly unstable. Any attempt to cut through the rock could cause the entire chasm to collapse.

CMDR. IVANOVA: We don't have a choice its that or we become prisoners on Romulus and I don't plan on having my brains probed.

CAPT. BRANSON: What about photon torpedoes?

LT. SITO: It could be doable.

Both Captain Branson and Commander Ivanova sits in their chairs ready.

CAPT. BRANSON: Lock the Oakland in a tractor beam.

Lieutenant Sito inputs commands into the ops console.

INT-ASTEROID CAVERN

The Enterprise locks a tractor beam onto the Parliament-class vessel.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

LT. SITO: Tractor beam locked on the Oakland sir.

CAPT. BRANSON: Full power to shields and integrity fields Mister Mason FIRE!

Lieutenant Mason presses the fire button on his console.

INT-ASTEROID CAVERN

The forward launcher unleashes a spread of photons at the blocked exit and explosions erupt from the direct hits as the cavern starts to fall apart.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

Ship jolt hard as sparks erupt from the MSD.

CAPT. BRANSON: Kara get us out of here.

LT. CARLSON: Aye, sir.

Lieutenant Carlson inputs commands into the helm station.

INT-ASTEROID CAVERN

The Enterprise starts moving as the rocks fall onto the shield armor as the Flagship tows the Oakland out of the cavern.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

Sparks erupt from the ceiling and helm station.

EXT-SPACE/ASTEROID FIELD

The Enterprise exits the cavern as smoke comes out of it and is ambushed by not one but seven Romulan warbirds two Kerchan-class and five Valdore-class vessels.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

Transparent viewer shows this as the bridge officers are shocked by this.

LT. SITO: Sir S'Lok is demanding that we lower our shields and prepare to be boarded or we'll be destroyed.

Before Captain Branson gives the surrender order something on Lieutenant Mason's console gets his attention and reports.

LT. MASON: Sir something just showed up on sensors.

Captain Branson turns to the transparent viewer.

CUT TO:
EXT-SPACE/ASTEROID FIELD

A taskforce of fourteen Federation vessels emerge from warp with the USS Vancouver in the lead.

INT-VANCOUVER MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

CAPT. BRANSON: (to com): This is Brianna Branson Captain of the Federation Starship USS Vancouver you will return to your side of the border or we'll be force to attack you don't make me give the order.

EXT-SPACE/ASTEROID FIELD

The Romulan forces fall back and cloak.

INT-ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (RED ALERT)

LT. MASON: The Romulan vessels are retreating back to the border.

Captain Branson breathes a sigh of relief.

CAPT. BRANSON: Stand down from Red Alert.

Lights brighten up.

CAPT. BRANSON: Sito give my regards to my sister.

LT. SITO: Aye, sir.

CUT TO:

INT-STARBASE WARDROOM

Captain Branson enters and walks over to the holo-table seeing his sister and Captain Ramsey.

CAPT. BRANSON: Admiral Nechayev.

FLEET ADM. NECHAYEV: Captain Branson welcome.

She inputs commands into the console and the holo-table activates.

FLEET. ADM. NECHAYEV: We received this intel from Commander T'Lar who is undercover as a Romulan she met with the Unification movement leaders and they were able to put her onboard a Kerchan-class warbird under the command of Sub-Commander S'Lok.

CAPT. BRANSON: Why S'Lok?

CAPT. BRANSON: S'Lok has been the most promising Romulan and you've gone up against him twice John.

FLEET ADM. NECHAYEV: So far we've got our posts along the border and the ships on patrol to keep an eye out for any Romulan activity and not to destroy S'Lok's ship.

Captain Branson puts his hand behind his back.

CAPT. BRANSON: Admiral I am having issues keeping this from Doctor Carlson her husband he's not wanting anything to do with me or my command orders he wants to know about his wife and what she's doing.

FLEET ADM. NECHAYEV: I'm sorry Captain but this is classified till further notice and I understand that you and Doctor Carlson have served on the Enterprise since you took command.

Captain Branson stands there and then leaves.
